米国には二人のトム・ウルフがいる。
一人はエスタブリッシュメントを自負するオッチョコチョイのベストセラー作家。そしてもう一人は、1938年にこの世を去った身長２メートルの作家。

今はほとんど話題にされることもない人物かもしれませんが、僕はこの身長２メートルの作家トーマス・ウルフに惹かれます。
日本語で翻訳されている本は、僕の知る限りでは「天使よ故郷を見よ」しかないと思われます。

フィクション（小説）だけでもこれだけあるのに、日本語で読むことが実は難しい作家ではあります。故に、ほとんどの日本人は知ることのない作家なのかもしれません。
彼は泥臭く自伝的な物語を通して米国の庶民の歴史を描きました。米国の当時ですら徐々に失われつつあった米国人の真の生活とその周辺の細かなリアリティーを記述することで、アメリカ人の内省を実行した人物でした。多くの同世代の「失われた世代」のようにヨーロッパに逃避することなく、冷蔵庫の上をデスク代わりに執筆したという話は、今もなお伝説として残っています。
